Kohl's 5-Day Prague & Český Krumlov Getaway

Travel

Ahoj! Five days is the goldilocks length for this trip, three days Prague, one day fairy-tale town, one day just breathing it all in. I’ve done this route four times now and every single time the city looks different, mist, sun, snow, whatever, it works. Here’s the version that never leaves me stressed.

Day 1 – Land and straight to the castle hill
I fly into Václav Havel early, bus to the center (cheap and easy), drop the backpack at a tiny pension just below the castle, stairs are killer but the view from the window makes up for it. First mission: up to Prague Castle before the big groups arrive. I’m there at 9 when it opens, golden light on St. Vitus, almost empty, feels like I own the place. Walk the Golden Lane when the guards aren’t looking too close, peek into the little toy museum because why not.

Then down through the vineyard, yes there’s a real vineyard on the hill, stop for a coffee with the best panorama in the city. Lunch is smažený sýr from a stand near the funicular, greasy and perfect. Afternoon I wander Malá Strana, red roofs, tiny gardens behind walls, get lost on purpose. Evening beer at the monastery brewery Strahov, two beers and the sunset from their terrace is stupid pretty. First night I crash early, church bells wake me up, love it.

Day 2 – Bridges and trdelník fuel
Early walk across Charles Bridge, zero people at 6:30, statues look spooky in the fog, perfect photos. Then breakfast at a place near Old Town Square, coffee and some pastry that’s basically sugar glued together. Watch the Astronomical Clock do its thing at 9, tourists clap, I smile because I already saw the bridge empty.

Rest of the morning: Jewish Quarter, old cemetery layered like a cake, feels heavy and beautiful. Then I hunt trdelník, not the tourist traps on the main drag, there’s a tiny stand behind the castle where the guy cooks them over real coals, cinnamon smell drags me there every time. I eat one while it’s still burning hot, fingers sticky, zero regrets.

Afternoon – boat on the Vltava, the tiny ones you pedal yourself, laughing when we almost crash into swans. Then up to Letná park, huge metronome, cold beer from the beer garden, whole city spread out below. Evening is Vinohrady neighborhood, locals only, some wine bar in a cellar, pork knee the size of my head, fall asleep on the tram home.

Day 3 – Day trip to Český Krumlov
Early bus, three hours, totally worth it. I get there at 10, town still sleepy, river curls around like a dragon. First I climb the castle tower, colorful houses below look fake, like someone spilled Lego. Then rafting on the Vltava, short route, wet shoes, laughing the whole time. Lunch at a riverside place, garlic soup in a bread bowl, warm and ridiculous.

Afternoon just walking, tiny streets, bear moat at the castle (actual bears!), some little shop where an old lady paints eggs by hand. I buy one every time. Late afternoon bus back, nap the whole way, golden hour hits Prague as we roll in, perfect timing.

Day 4 – Prague slow mode
No alarm today. Sleep till 9, breakfast on the pension terrace, birds stealing my crumbs. Then Vyšehrad, everyone skips it, huge mistake. Old fortress, quiet cemetery with famous dead people, view over the river that beats the castle one sometimes. Picnic there with bread, cheese, and a bottle of frankovka from the corner shop.

Afternoon I wander Náplavka along the river, Saturday farmers market if I’m lucky, buy cherries and eat the whole bag. Maybe the modern art museum at Veletržní if I feel smart, or just sit by the water watching paddle boats. Evening: jazz club under Charles Bridge, smoky, cheap entry, sax player older than the republic. One beer turns into four, stumble home happy.

Day 5 – Last tastes and goodbye
Final morning I go back to whatever I loved most, usually Petřín hill, funicular up, mirror maze like a kid, then the mini Eiffel Tower for the view. One last trdelník (yes, again), one last coffee staring at the river. Then tram to the airport, already missing the sound of trams and church bells.

Five days, no rush, full heart. Czech magic works every time.
